Opened in early 2024 in a historic 1930s brick building in the Midtown Handle District, Mattie Groves Brewery has quickly established itself as something genuinely different on the Sacramento craft beer scene. The name draws from a traditional British folk ballad, and that folklore-rooted identity carries through everything — the branding, the interior, and the deliberate “third space” philosophy behind the taproom itself. Soaring vaulted ceilings, exposed brick, original terracotta tile floors, and hand-built trestle tables crafted from a single cedar tree make it one of the more striking spaces in Midtown.

Beer

The rotating tap list spans pilsners, pale ales, hazy and double IPAs, stouts, porters, and farmhouse ales, each with a distinct identity. Standouts include the High Tider Oyster Stout — brewed with fresh Pacific Northwest oysters for a silky, slightly briny finish — and a selection of English bitters and milds that are a genuine rarity in the region. Each pour reflects a strong craft identity and a brewery that clearly thinks beyond the obvious.

Food

Rather than standard pub fare, Mattie Groves offers a curated tinned fish menu — smoked salmon, oysters, sardines, mussels, and other globally sourced selections served with kettle chips and house accompaniments. It’s a natural pairing with the beer program and a conversation starter in its own right. Outside food is also welcome, making it easy to bring something in from nearby neighbors like Crepeville or Jack’s Urban Eats.

Events

The weekly calendar reflects the taproom’s community-first approach. Monday is dedicated to Magic: The Gathering (Commander format), Tuesday brings pub quiz at 6:30 PM, and Wednesday hosts an open mic for music, poetry, and comedy starting at 7 PM. Sacramento’s first bar built from repurposed shipping containers, Der Biergarten brought something genuinely new to Midtown when it opened on the corner of 24th and K Streets. The concept is straightforward and unapologetic: an authentic, 100% outdoor German beer garden with communal wooden tables imported from Germany, a massive draft selection, and an atmosphere built around actually talking to the people around you. No TVs, no loud music — just good beer and good company.

The Atmosphere

The communal table setup isn’t just aesthetic — it’s intentional. You’re as likely to end up sharing a stein with a stranger as with the friends you came with, which is exactly the point. The open space accommodates cornhole, foosball, and ping pong, and the crowd skews dog-friendly and family-friendly during the afternoon before transitioning to a more grown-up vibe as the evening picks up. Being an outdoor-only venue, they close on rainy days — but on a warm Sacramento afternoon, there may not be a better patio in Midtown.

Beer

Thirty-two taps, with the emphasis firmly on German imports — Hofbräu, Paulaner, Radeberger, and their kin — alongside a rotating selection of local craft breweries. Order by the half-liter or go full stein. The Weihenstephaner Vitus is a standout worth seeking out, and specialty pours like the Schofferhofer Starburst (grapefruit hefeweizen and pomegranate cider) have developed their own following. The menu sticks to light German-inspired fare and does it well.
