Opened in early 2024 in a historic 1930s brick building in the Midtown Handle District, Mattie Groves Brewery has quickly established itself as something genuinely different on the Sacramento craft beer scene. The name draws from a traditional British folk ballad, and that folklore-rooted identity carries through everything — the branding, the interior, and the deliberate &#8220;third space&#8221; philosophy behind the taproom itself. Soaring vaulted ceilings, exposed brick, original terracotta tile floors, and hand-built trestle tables crafted from a single cedar tree make it one of the more striking spaces in Midtown.</div>
<h3>Beer</h3>
<div style="margin-bottom: 10px;">The rotating tap list spans pilsners, pale ales, hazy and double IPAs, stouts, porters, and farmhouse ales, each with a distinct identity. Standouts include the High Tider Oyster Stout — brewed with fresh Pacific Northwest oysters for a silky, slightly briny finish — and a selection of English bitters and milds that are a genuine rarity in the region. Each pour reflects a strong craft identity and a brewery that clearly thinks beyond the obvious.</div>

<h3>Food</h3>
<div style="margin-bottom: 10px;">Rather than standard pub fare, Mattie Groves offers a curated tinned fish menu — smoked salmon, oysters, sardines, mussels, and other globally sourced selections served with kettle chips and house accompaniments. It&#8217;s a natural pairing with the beer program and a conversation starter in its own right. Outside food is also welcome, making it easy to bring something in from nearby neighbors like Crepeville or Jack&#8217;s Urban Eats.</div>

<h3>Events</h3>
<div style="margin-bottom: 18px;">The weekly calendar reflects the taproom&#8217;s community-first approach. Monday is dedicated to Magic: The Gathering (Commander format), Tuesday brings pub quiz at 6:30 PM, and Wednesday hosts an open mic for music, poetry, and comedy starting at 7 PM. Board games and card games are always available for walk-ins. Family and dog-friendly throughout.</div>

Streets Pub and Grub has been a cornerstone of the Midtown social scene for years, and the corner of 18th and J Streets is a better place for it. Part classic British pub, part American sports bar, it pulls off both without feeling like either is a compromise. The vibe is unpretentious and genuinely welcoming — the kind of place where regulars have been coming for years and newcomers fold right in without any effort.</div>
<h3>Food</h3>
<div style="margin-bottom: 18px;">The kitchen leans into generous portions across a mix of British classics and American bar food. The beer-battered Fish N&#8217; Chips hold up the British end of things admirably, while the 8oz Angus burgers — particularly the Ol&#8217; Smokey (BBQ, onion strings, bacon) and the Black N&#8217; Blue — have earned their own loyal following. Breakfast items including Breakfast Burritos and Breakfast Burgers are served all day, which is a rarity in Midtown and worth knowing about.</div>
<h3>Beer</h3>
<div style="margin-bottom: 18px;">Eighteen rotating taps cover both ends of the spectrum — European staples like Guinness and Modelo alongside local heavyweights from Knee Deep, New Glory, and Altamont. The full bar backs it up for those who want something beyond draft. Happy hour runs Monday through Friday from 5 PM to 7 PM, and again during Kings and NFL games, with discounts on food and drinks.</div>
<h3>Sports &amp; Events</h3>
<div style="margin-bottom: 18px;">Streets shows everything — NFL, NBA, MLB, Premier League — across a wall of HD screens with a sound system to match during big matchups. The weekly calendar keeps things lively beyond game days: Tuesday brings open mic comedy, Wednesday and Friday run karaoke, and Sunday hosts pub trivia at 7 PM. The back patio hosts beer pong and socializing year-round, while the front patio is a solid perch for watching J Street foot traffic.</div>
