Opened in early 2024 in a historic 1930s brick building in the Midtown Handle District, Mattie Groves Brewery has quickly established itself as something genuinely different on the Sacramento craft beer scene. The name draws from a traditional British folk ballad, and that folklore-rooted identity carries through everything — the branding, the interior, and the deliberate “third space” philosophy behind the taproom itself. Soaring vaulted ceilings, exposed brick, original terracotta tile floors, and hand-built trestle tables crafted from a single cedar tree make it one of the more striking spaces in Midtown.

Beer

The rotating tap list spans pilsners, pale ales, hazy and double IPAs, stouts, porters, and farmhouse ales, each with a distinct identity. Standouts include the High Tider Oyster Stout — brewed with fresh Pacific Northwest oysters for a silky, slightly briny finish — and a selection of English bitters and milds that are a genuine rarity in the region. Each pour reflects a strong craft identity and a brewery that clearly thinks beyond the obvious.

Food

Rather than standard pub fare, Mattie Groves offers a curated tinned fish menu — smoked salmon, oysters, sardines, mussels, and other globally sourced selections served with kettle chips and house accompaniments. It’s a natural pairing with the beer program and a conversation starter in its own right. Outside food is also welcome, making it easy to bring something in from nearby neighbors like Crepeville or Jack’s Urban Eats.

View the Food Menu

Events

The weekly calendar reflects the taproom’s community-first approach. Monday is dedicated to Magic: The Gathering (Commander format), Tuesday brings pub quiz at 6:30 PM, and Wednesday hosts an open mic for music, poetry, and comedy starting at 7 PM. Board games and card games are always available for walk-ins. Family and dog-friendly throughout.

Named after the owners’ 140-pound Great Pyrenees, MoJo’s Local Tap & Kitchen sits at the edge of Midtown near the Memorial Auditorium and takes its “Local” identity seriously — from a tap list heavily weighted toward Sacramento-area breweries to a kitchen influenced by the chef’s New Orleans background. The result is a space that feels genuinely neighborhood-rooted: contemporary and relaxed, with large roll-up doors that open the interior onto a dog-friendly patio and a crowd that skews families, regulars, and sports fans in roughly equal measure.

Drinks

With 25+ rotating taps, the draft list covers IPAs, pale ales, pilsners, lagers, wheat beers, porters, stouts, sours, ciders, and hard seltzers — plus wine, kombucha, and non-alcoholic options. The emphasis is firmly on local and regional breweries, keeping the lineup fresh and Sacramento-focused. Happy hour runs weekdays from 3 PM to 6 PM with $1 off full-pour drafts and food specials.

View the Drink Menu

Food

The menu takes pub fare in a bolder direction. Starters like wings, Bavarian pretzels with beer cheese, street tacos, chicharrones, and house-made chips & salsa are built for sharing, while the main menu runs burgers, sandwiches, and salads with some New Orleans influence woven in. The Cajun Bacon Blue Burger, the Hot Honey Fried Chicken Sandwich, and the Dip Trio are standout orders. Sunday brunch kicks off at 9:30 AM with a dedicated menu.

View the Food Menu

Sports & Events

Multiple HD screens and a genuine enthusiasm for local teams make MoJo’s a reliable game-day destination — Kings playoff nights in particular bring a high-energy crowd. Beyond sports, the space is designed as a true neighborhood gathering spot, welcoming to kids, dogs, and regulars alike. The patio and roll-up doors make it one of the more comfortable indoor-outdoor setups in this part of Midtown.

Tucked into the corner of 16th and Q Streets in Midtown, 5 Tacos & Beers occupies the spacious, high-ceilinged venue longtime Sacramentans may remember as Hot Italian. The energy here runs high — a family-owned spot rooted in generations of Jaliscan recipes, thoughtfully elevated with locally sourced Northern California ingredients. This isn’t a quick taco run; it’s a full sit-down experience where the food is taken seriously and the drinks menu backs it up.

Drinks

The bar covers a lot of ground — lagers, IPAs, sours, and rotating seasonal pours share the menu with an extensive cocktail program featuring tequila, mezcal, and house creations like the Encanto Mexicano. Whether you’re a craft beer regular or a cocktail-first kind of person, you’ll find your footing here.

View the Beer Menu

Food

The tortillas are made fresh daily — and once you taste them, you’ll understand why regulars make the trip just for that. The menu leans into tradition with carne asada, carnitas, al pastor, and barbacoa, while also offering less common proteins like pulpo (octopus) and soy chorizo for the adventurous or plant-forward. Rounding it out are quesabirria, ceviche, flautas, fresh guacamole, and solid options for both vegetarians and kids. View the Sacramento Food Menu

Weekly Specials

5 Tacos & Beers runs some of the better all-you-can-eat deals in Midtown. Taco Tuesday brings an AYCE taco buffet, Thursday is all about quesabirria, and the weekend brunch buffet — Saturday and Sunday from 10 AM to 5 PM — features menudo, pozole, flan, and bottomless mimosas. These nights draw a crowd, and for good reason.

Insider tip: For the Tuesday buffet, plan to arrive on the earlier side — it fills up fast and the most popular proteins tend to go first as the night picks up.

Sitting at the corner of 12th and R Streets, Twisted Track Station is one of the more creatively minded stops on the R Street Corridor. Part of the Roc&Sol lifestyle brand — which ties food, local art, and music together under one roof — it operates as a restaurant, bar, and coffee house that runs from early morning through late night. The Twisted Track Gallery next door hosts rotating art exhibits, and the Station’s own patio carries that same art-forward energy with murals and installations woven throughout.

Drinks

The full bar covers creative house cocktails — espresso martinis, margaritas, mules, and seasonal specials — alongside classics like Irish coffee and rum runners, plus mimosas, cider, wine, and rotating beer on tap. The coffee program runs parallel with espresso drinks, cold brew, and teas, making it equally suited for a morning meeting or a late-night round.

View the Drink Menu

Food

The menu covers the full day — breakfast burritos, sandwiches, and avocado toast in the morning, shareable bites like wings, loaded fries, queso, and taquitos throughout the day, and burgers, fried chicken sandwiches, fish tacos, and salads when you’re ready for something more substantial. Standouts include the Cheeseburger Spring Rolls, the triple-patty Station Burger, and the Street Dog topped with smoked pork belly and piquillo ketchup.

Events

Twisted Track leans into the R Street arts scene with genuine enthusiasm. First Fridays bring live vinyl sets and gallery receptions, 80s tribute and themed music nights draw a loyal crowd, and Sunday Dog Party runs weekly from 11 AM to 2 PM with drink specials and doggie treats on the patio. It’s a natural hub for anyone who wants their night out to feel like more than just a bar stop.

Formerly known as Wise Axe, ForePlay Bar landed at 20th and K Streets in Midtown’s Lavender District with a rebranded mission: less dedicated axe gym, more full-on social hub. The result is one of the more versatile stops on the grid — part bar, part arcade, part lounge — with enough going on that you could easily lose a few hours without noticing.

Activities & Games

The axe throwing lanes are still here and still staffed with coaches for first-timers, but that’s just the start. ForePlay also runs professional billiard tables, skee-ball, foosball, pinball, shuffleboard, Jet Pong, a punching bag game, and a rotating selection of video games. Free shuffleboard and tabletop board games are available for walk-ins. Whether you’re here for a competitive night out or just something to do with your hands while you drink, there’s no shortage of options.

Drinks

Sixteen taps cover a rotating lineup of local craft beers, ciders, and seltzers, backed by a full liquor license and a cocktail menu with some personality. The bar sits in a good spot for a pre-game drink before heading deeper into the Midtown night, or as a destination in its own right for groups who want activity with their alcohol.

Food

Snacks are available at the bar, but ForePlay takes a relaxed approach to outside food — guests are welcome to bring in food from any of the nearby Midtown restaurants. It’s a practical policy that works well given the neighborhood.

Sac Brew Bike Special

ForePlay is offering Sac Brew Bike customers $5 beers and 15 minutes of axe throwing for $5. Don’t miss it.

Shipwrecked: Paradise Island is not a bar you walk into — it’s one you step into. Taking over a 16th Street space and transforming it from the ground up, this immersive tiki bar and craft cocktail lounge commits fully to its tropical rainforest concept. Hollowed-out tree trunks serve as seating, party booths are tucked into overgrown ancient ruins, animatronic wildlife lurks throughout, and a towering 100-foot snake winds through the space overhead. Guests are typically greeted with a flower lei at the door, which tells you everything about the kind of night you’re in for.

Cocktails

The drink menu is built around fresh fruit infusions and theatrical presentations, with cocktails organized by intensity from “Balanced” to “Pirate Strength.” The Banana Boat Bliss leans tropical and creamy, the Mexican Jungle Bird runs sweet and colorful, and the Zombie Jet Pilot sits at the far end of the spectrum for those who mean business. The full cocktail menu covers a wide range of styles and strengths.

View the Cocktail Menu

Food

The Island Bites menu goes well beyond typical tiki bar snacks — oysters on the half shell, salmon sashimi, Demerara steak skewers, shrimp cocktail, dumplings, and more make it a legitimate food stop rather than an afterthought.

View the Food Menu

Events

Shipwrecked is known for full seasonal transformations — the entire décor and menu shift for a Christmas North Pole pop-up in December and a Ghost Ship Circus theme in October. Thursday nights run Mojito Nights with $20 pitchers of flavored mojitos. Reservations are recommended for Friday and Saturday, particularly for groups. This is a 21+ venue.

Sac Brew Bike Special

Brew Bike riders enjoy $5 off the Zombie Jet Pilot — a pirate-strength cocktail featuring Bacardi 8yr, Plantation O.F.T.D. Overproof Rum, Plantation Xaymaca, almond Velvet Falernum, Caribbean spices, fresh citrus, Angostura bitters, and a splash of 151 proof rum down the straw. Limited to one per guest, for obvious reasons.

Tucked into the Café Bernardo complex at the corner of 15th and R Streets, R15 is something of a hidden gem on the R Street Corridor — a sophisticated lounge bar that benefits from being connected to one of Sacramento’s most well-regarded restaurant kitchens. Plush seating, dark wood accents, pool tables, and a wall of flat screens give it a settled, urban den quality that sets it apart from the louder spots nearby. The music stays at a level where you can actually have a conversation, which turns out to be a selling point in itself.

Food

One of R15’s genuine advantages is full access to the Café Bernardo menu — well above the standard bar snack lineup. You can order the Bernardo Burger, artisanal pizzas, fresh seasonal salads, and more directly to your barstool or pool table. Bar-focused bites include Korean wings, nachos, ranch sliders, quesadilla, avocado toast, bar fries, and pizza. Happy hour runs Monday through Friday from 3 PM to 6 PM with deals on drafts, house wines, and select appetizers.

Drinks

The bar program covers craft cocktails, a curated selection of regional draft beers, and an impressive range of California wines by the glass — reflecting the farm-to-glass ethos of the Paragary Restaurant Group. Seasonal rotating adult slushies are a signature touch worth trying.

Games & Atmosphere

Four pool tables, twelve flat screens, and a collection of living room-style spaces — each with a sectional couch, plasma screen, and table — make R15 equally suited for a game day crowd or a low-key evening out. Two patio options round it out: a lively sidewalk patio on 15th Street and a quieter shared patio with the café for a more relaxed setting.

Henry’s is widely considered one of the better spots in Sacramento to catch a game. HD screens throughout and a full sports package lineup mean there’s always something on, including early Sunday NFL kickoffs during football season. The back of the lounge houses two professional pool tables, arcade cabinets, and electronic dart boards — enough to keep a group entertained well into the evening.

Food

The menu sticks to American bar classics and does them well. Bar bites cover nachos, wings, garlic cheese bread, onion rings, and more, while the main menu runs burgers, salads, and sandwiches including a Club, French Dip, and Philly Cheesesteak. Loaded fries and the classic cheeseburger are particular standouts.

Food and Drink Menu

Drinks

The bar runs a full lineup — local craft drafts and domestics on tap, a solid selection of bottled beers, margaritas, martinis, mixed cocktails, and wine. Happy hour runs Monday through Friday from 4 PM to 7 PM with deals on well drinks and bottled beers.

Weekly Events

Henry’s keeps a consistent weekly calendar that gives regulars a reason to come back on any given night. Monday brings Open Mic Night, Tuesday has karaoke and 8-ball pool tournaments, Wednesday runs trivia, and Thursday is 9-ball tournament night. It’s the kind of place where you can make it a habit.

Twenty-plus years in, The Golden Bear remains one of Midtown’s most reliable constants. Open since 2004 at 24th and K Streets, it has the lived-in comfort of a true neighborhood bar with a kitchen that punches well above pub grub expectations — a combination that earned it a spot on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives and a loyal following that has stuck around ever since. The staff is welcoming, the vibe is laid-back, and the door is open to everyone.

Food

The menu takes a California-Mediterranean approach with some unexpected swings — the Juicy Lucy, a cheddar-stuffed burger patty, has become something of a local legend, while adobo wings, kimchi fried rice, and the Bong Rip Hawaiian Pizza keep things interesting. Weekend brunch leans party-forward with breakfast pizzas and the Sunrise Sando. Lunch, happy hour, dinner, and brunch are all served, and the kitchen is scratch-made throughout.

Food Menus

Drinks

Sixteen-plus rotating taps keep the craft beer selection fresh, with ales, lagers, IPAs, and ciders well represented. The cocktail program emphasizes fresh juices and house-made syrups — no standard well-drink shortcuts. Happy hour runs Monday through Friday from 4 PM to 7 PM with solid deals on tacos and tallboys.

Events & Entertainment

DJs take over on Friday and Saturday nights — energetic enough to dance to, without the bottle-service atmosphere of a bigger club. Weekly Wednesday trivia nights draw a regular crowd, and the annual Hot Toddy Competition has become a Midtown tradition. The back patio, with its own bar and heaters for cooler nights, is one of the better-kept outdoor secrets on the grid.

Tucked into Jazz Alley between 23rd and 24th Streets, Cantina Alley has been bringing Mexico to Midtown since 2017 — and doing it with enough flair to earn Best New Restaurant honors from Sacramento News & Review, along with KCRA A-List wins for Best Mexican Restaurant and Most Trendiest Bar. The entrance through a narrow alleyway that opens into a vibrant open-air courtyard sets the tone immediately: murals, hanging lights, Mexican folk art, and an energy that’s hard to match anywhere else on the grid.

Food

The menu is built around street food done right. Al pastor and Baja fish tacos on handmade tortillas are the headliners, but the full spread covers bacon-wrapped hot dogs, taquitos, shrimp tostadas, soups, sandwiches, and solid vegan options. The elote — available on the cob or en vaso — is a must-order, and there’s a vegan version as well. A la carte ordering makes it easy to graze your way through the menu. View the full menu

Drinks

Cantina Alley earns its reputation as a tequila and mezcal bar with a cocktail program to back it up. The margaritas and aguas frescas draw regulars, the micheladas are considered some of the best in Midtown, and the “Tacolgando” — a specialty drink with an elaborate garnish presentation — has become something of a signature. Mexican craft beers and rare imports round out the bar.

The Vibe

This is a see-and-be-seen kind of place, especially on weekends when the courtyard fills up and the energy runs high. Cinco de Mayo is their signature event — a full festival with live music and performers that takes over the alley. Throughout the year it’s a natural gathering spot for bar crawls, local mixers, and anyone who wants a lively night out.

Insider tip: Visit on a Tuesday or Wednesday right at opening and you’ll have your pick of seats, including the prime spots near the murals.
