The Golden Bear

Twenty-plus years in, The Golden Bear remains one of Midtown’s most reliable constants. Open since 2004 at 24th and K Streets, it has the lived-in comfort of a true neighborhood bar with a kitchen that punches well above pub grub expectations — a combination that earned it a spot on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives and a loyal following that has stuck around ever since. The staff is welcoming, the vibe is laid-back, and the door is open to everyone.

The menu takes a California-Mediterranean approach with some unexpected swings — the Juicy Lucy, a cheddar-stuffed burger patty, has become something of a local legend, while adobo wings, kimchi fried rice, and the Bong Rip Hawaiian Pizza keep things interesting. Weekend brunch leans party-forward with breakfast pizzas and the Sunrise Sando. Lunch, happy hour, dinner, and brunch are all served, and the kitchen is scratch-made throughout.

Sixteen-plus rotating taps keep the craft beer selection fresh, with ales, lagers, IPAs, and ciders well represented. The cocktail program emphasizes fresh juices and house-made syrups — no standard well-drink shortcuts. Happy hour runs Monday through Friday from 4 PM to 7 PM with solid deals on tacos and tallboys.

DJs take over on Friday and Saturday nights — energetic enough to dance to, without the bottle-service atmosphere of a bigger club. Weekly Wednesday trivia nights draw a regular crowd, and the annual Hot Toddy Competition has become a Midtown tradition. The back patio, with its own bar and heaters for cooler nights, is one of the better-kept outdoor secrets on the grid.
